Tips for Writing a Letter to the Editor
- Leave your contact information, email and phone, so the paper can follow-up with you.
- Limit your letter to 200-250 words
- Your letter should only address one concept or topic
- Mention an article already printed by the paper to increase the chances your letter will run.
- Draw attention with your introduction. Instead of “I’m writing to respond to the Star-Herald article on September 23rd,” try “I support the Keystone Pipeline and the September 23rd article left me thinking that if it’s news in Nebraska, it’s news to the Star-Herald.”
- Remember your audience. You are trying to impact the opinion of the public, not your opponent. Be sure to be fair and respectful of other opinions.
- Don’t repeat criticisms or untruths about your issue. Avoid saying “Some say the Keystone XL Pipeline will spring a leak…” Better to say “The Keystone XL Pipeline meets rigorous safety standards and will be the safest, most technologically advanced…”
- Omit needless words and be concise. You don’t need to say, “I think…” because it’s obvious.
- Direct readers to a source for information about the facts.
- Be persistent. If the publication doesn’t contact you in 48 hours to verify your submission, call them to ensure it was received and ask when it will run.
